Songs/Arrangements/Remixes/Productions/Projects  in 2008

Intro
Never really had a habit in keeping too many tracks of what I've been doing.
I mean, keeping up with the Synth sections of this web is already quite time consuming. But since the web is up, and I have all these space, I was gonna slowly re-write and build up my portfo / show-reel, but well, that's probably gonna take quite some time.
But I suppose if I start writing up stuff I've been doing, it'll help to complete this portfo/show-reel thing, at least I won't need to do the later catching up's.
So for the moment, these pages will include some info on the songs / arrangements / remixes / productions / projects that I have worked on during the year 2008.

horizontal rule

2008 was a strange but busy year.

Not only that I went on tour, with Eason Chan, around the world, but also half way thru the year, I left my A&R job at the record company, so I'm back to freelancing again.

First half of the year was split between record company works and touring.
Second half of the year was touring and starting of the next Eason Chan album.

Not been writing/releasing a lot of songs, but been helping out on productions a lot...

Produced by C. Y. Kong / Stanley Leung
Piano: 伍敬彬

Chorus: Pam Chung 鍾達茵

Recorded at Avon Studios, engineered by Anthony Leung
Mixed by Y. Yamamoto
Comments:
This was done back in November 2007, immediately after the Moving On Stage1 shows.
Basically Hacken wanted another piano song, and picked this one by Edmond Tsang, I helped to add in 2 parts - one where he wanted to sing the "Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" and holding the note long, and also the music break where there's a female choir voice.
Pam (Chung) did the female voice, since I saw her doing a high female voice in a previous Eason tour (where they used this voice as the intro line to 浮誇), so I knew she could do this. She also did the backing chorus.

Tracks:

02 金光燦爛 Gleaming Glamours

06 男孩子挑選哪位? Which Boy To Choose?

Overall Comments:
I guess it might be a surprised for me appearing on Stephy's album!
Maybe people thought I was working in one record company and could not work for other rival companies. But there weren't really any rules. I submitted 2 songs to Mr. Gary Chan, producer of this album.
Knew Gary Chan way back during the "Music Is Live" initial shows, we kept bumping into him at Tom Lee Music, and he asked if I had any uptempo songs. I sent him these and he produced them for Stephy. These songs were done in late 2007, but released in spring 2008.

Original Working Title: Addiction

Music : C.Y. Kong | Lyrics : Kit Fong 方杰 | Arrangement : C.Y. In London

Produced by: Gary Chan

Synths, Keyboards, Programming & Tweaks:  C. Y.

Music Recorded at 12/46, London, UK, engineered by C.Y.

Mixed by Simon ‘nOiz‘ Li

Comments:
Well... I wrote this around Oct 2005. Wanted to do a pop uptempo song.
Everything first evolved around the arpeggiator sound and the groove.
Quite a few of my analogue synths in London were used on the track.
While I was back in Hong Kong, during 2007, Gary Tong and Alvin Leong said they had signed a new artist, and asked if I had any uptempo songs so she could try sing the demo for practice.
So I had a demo with the new girl, Keeva, singing the guide vocals.
Back at Universal, we were starting A&R and production for Kelly Chen, I actually submitted this song to them, although they liked the song, they would rather prefer other musical arrangements. So in the end the deal was off, and I passed this to Gary Chan when he asked for demos, and he used this on Stephy's album.
The song also became some online game promotional theme song!

Comments:

This was written in 2004, around the time when I was surrounded with analogue synths in London. So the basis of the track was mostly analogue synths! Kinda wanted to something around that electronic feel.

I think in 2005/06, this was submitted to Ms Joey Yung / EEG by my publishing company, Joey liked the song but it seemed the company rejected it, so it was still with me when Gary Chan asked for demos, and he used on this Stephy's album.

Comments:
I helped A&R and picked Kelly's plug song (抱歉柯德莉夏萍) on this album.
Kelly asked me to write & produce, and in the end they picked this one and we recorded this in late 2007.
Song was originally written back in 2005. Original idea was you received an SMS and you are reading it in the rain, and you know the person is lying... some kind of music video i got.
I also used that mobile phone noise in the song as part of the rhythm effects.
Somehow I still thnk this song kinda reminds me of S.H.E.

I was going thru some demos that Universal Music Publishing had passed to us and one song i thought would really fit Hins. It did remind me a bit of one of Hins' hit, but this has a different feeling.
I passed the song to Yuen-jai 遠仔 to do the arrangement, as he always comes up with slightly diverse / not the usual arrangement.  Pal produced the vocals.

Comments:
This was originally done at the end of December 2007. Eason wanted to sing a different version for the song during the awards, and he sang a jazzy big band demo into my mobile phone.
We then passed it to Ted Lo and we got back this brilliant Big Band version...
Universal later decided to released this on the Solidays Greatest Hits compilation, so we went into the studio and recorded the vocals.

Comments:
Eason had this demo from Adam Diaz (Dear Jane) for a long time and he wanted to do this song as one of the two new songs on this compilation. He and Wyman worked on the lyrics and talked about backstage stuff, the people who supported him at the back all these years.
His two friends, Jaycee and Shawn Yue came to visit him while we were recording vocals, and they helped out on the "Na na na"s at the end of the song.
We were all invited to take part in the music video (along with the other new song 歌頌).

Comments:
Back in December 2008, RTHK (Radio Hong Kong) asked us to do a Medley for Eason to perform in their Jan 2008 awards show. It was to be a tribute to 80s/90s male singers in Hong Kong, and Eason had picked these songs.
Since Eason had just released the "Listen To Eason Chan" dance album and did a lot of dancing in the "Moving On Stage 1" concerts, I thought that maybe if I could mix Eason's song arrangement into these structure of this medley it would be fun!
During the years I've done quite a few of these medleys, for example, like the Sandy Lam medley which stringed all her hits together, or a Lam greatest hits medley... The most difficult part for these medleys is how to go from one song to another. A lot of time was actually put into planning which part to sing, how the transitions from one song to another one should be, the key, the tempo.
It's hard to do, but if done right, it's a very satisfying feeling.
For this particular medley, especially i wanted to put play all the songs using Eason's song elements, it needs a lot of effort to get it right. And I am really very glad that everyone loves this. Thank you all! =)
Eason & I were very satisfied with the result... and it was well received by the public.
Universal then thought they asked RTHK for the performance clip and released this as a bonus on the DVD on the compilation.
Well, there were 2 problems, originally they wanted to do karaoke for this, but Eason sang quite some lyrics wrong at a few places, and I thought that, also, they would re-edit the video for this - hence Eason & I agreed that he re-sang a "proper" version.
When recording, he also recorded a fun version, just for fun, pretending the different accents of various singers. I suggested maybe we include this 'Fun'/"Play" version as the second track audio on the DVD track.
But in the end people got confused. Cos they didn't re-edit the video, plus both versions were the same audio clip... (somehow due to some mistakes, i think they put the same audio on the DVD video and hence the 'fun' version was not there).  =(
And since we love this very much, Eason will sometimes sing this in various places on tour. There's no rule when or which he sings this, just random... (So far, it was performed again in Macau and also ShenZhen)...
Well... heheh....

Alvin (Leong) & Gary (Tong) had signed Keeva in 2007, daughter of a friend of Gary's.
Keeva's been singing a few demos for us before and in 2008, her debut single "殺死我的温柔" was very well received.
This was the 2nd plugged single, end of August / September.
First demo of this song I did was back in 2006... the original idea was "Stray", like you have 2 hands in your (trousers) pockets. straying on the streets. Later in 2008, Pam (Chung) sang the demo for this, and I passed to Alvin and we decided to use this for Keeva.

Overall Comments:
Universal signed Eva as an artist the year before, and as A&R, I planned to put her to write lyrics for other artists, and tried to develope her as one of the major lyricists, which would help her career. (Hence, before her own album, you started seeing her lyrics on some of our productions, such as Eason Chan, Stephy Tang, Kary Ng, Hins Cheung, etc).
She already had 4 or 5 demos when we started the album production, but it turned out that we couldn't touch some of her (more pop potential) songs, as she already started production before. In the end, Davy, Stanley & I helped on the rest of the album.

I originally wrote this back in 2002. In fact it was recorded back in 2002, but with a slightly different melody - but the song was somehow not used and not paid for, as the artist left the record company and joined another record company.
I always wanted to re-write the song, but never had the time, and in this project, I passed it to Eva and she wrote some melodies and I re-combined the best bits from each of us in to this song.

If major radio stations play music 24 hours a day (rather than having talk shows or game shows),
it would really help revive the music scene. Years ago, we hear songs on the radio day & night,
like you'd hear 15 songs in every hour. Nowadays, they play only a few songs within the hour.
The more people listen to songs, the more chance they like the songs,
or have the chance to pick up songs they not heard before,
