Solton SM100
SM100 - The Top Panel - The Parameters |
Although without a manual, all the parameters are listed on the top of the case. |
|
|
** There is one hidden Parameter on the SM100 that is not printed
out on the top panel. PARAMETER 36 is actually the MIDI Channel Select
parameter! ** I have seen some people asking about this, since it seems that no one has a manual!! |
Without a manual, one would have thought, the only way to edit this beast is to browse thru each listed parameter and use the Edit +/- buttons to change values. |
However, the parameters are actually midi controllable - yes, they respond to Midi CC's. |
Mark R. Strijbos has experimented, fiddled and accidentally stumbled upon a way to set all the patch parameters via Midi CC's. He's even written a small editor for the SM100. |
However he didn't list out the Midi CC's - so I downloaded his program and figured out which CC is which. Below is the Midi CC table. |

Some SM100 Soundz |
|||
|
Just a quick run thru some of the Preset
Sounds, these include various Organs, Strings, Brasses, Vibes, E Piano,
Fake Guitars and so on. They might be a bit put off, as they sound very 80s poly synth, not very special, but there are some nice stuff in there, such as the Choir and the Space (sweep). Notice tho, the thick voicing, distinguish its quality from cheaper poly synths such as the Korg Poly800/EX800 and so on. To me, it reminds me more of the Roland JX but less lush, probably due to a poor chorus effect section. And gee, the Chorus has quite a lot of hiss too! |
||
|
On this particular SM100
nearly all the User Presets (40-99) are filled with like effects sounds.
(Either the previous user did this or it actually came with these, I have
no idea). Here's an mp3 that I captured while I was going thru them. |

|
I admit, I haven't had a lot of time in
putting these sound demos together. This one, I captured while I was
testing out my
Cubase
SX Device Panel. So basically, it's holding sound notes, then tweaking some of the parameters. But, you can hear here how the SM100 can be controlled via MIDI, doing filter sweeps and so on. |

Overall Comments & So On... |
I suppose, the SM100 is not really a ''must have'' item,
even tho it's a fairly rare beast. Stuff like the Korg Poly6, Poly61, Roland JX or even Oberheim all have more distinct character than the SM100. But that said, the SM100 is not bad at all, once it's under Midi Control, it opens up a lot more possibilities. And it is a 6 voice mega poly SSM synth! So I guess, if you can find one cheap, and have the space to accommodate it, it can add that something!! |
